Materials Science Engineer

NorthStar’s mission is to transform the medical radioisotopes industry by becoming a global leader of innovative diagnostic & therapeutic medical radioisotopes.  In fulfillment of this mission, NorthStar has developed a groundbreaking isotope processing instrument/medical device that will efficiently produce important medical radioisotopes on site at a radiopharmacy.  The inaugural version of this groundbreaking isotope processing instrument/medical device received FDA approval in February of 2018.

NorthStar is in search of an entry-level Material Science Engineer to join their Research and Development (R&D) Team.  The main responsibility for this position is material bio-compatibility with the majority of the materials being polymers.  The candidate will become NorthStar’s Subject matter Expert (SME) in biocompatibility and provide support to all R&D groups across the company.  The candidate will support in New Product Development for NorthStar’s isotope processing instrument and NorthStar’s radioactive processing equipment.

Along with assisting in New Product Development, the candidate will brings their knowledge of science, polymers, and material chemistry into an Extractables & Leachables Program.  This includes gathering technical information about engineering system/set up and managing the implementation of novel radioisotope manufacturing technologies.  The candidate will develop and execute Extractables & Leachables testing from concept phase through design, planning, and execution as well as develop and maintain a data base of tested materials.

The job will involve working with in-house employees as well as out-of-house suppliers, vendors, and test labs to evaluate

materials that will meet NorthStar’s needs.  The Material Science Engineer position at NorthStar is critical to the company’s continued success and growth by providing technical leadership with regards to patient safety.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following, other duties may be assigned:

  1. Support Engineering’s new product development projects in collaboration with cross-functional teams with an overall focus on patient safety.
  2. Be the Subject Matter Expert (SME) for the instrumentation and process equipment materials relevant to material compatibility.
  3. Develop and drive an Extractables & Leachables and Materials Compatibility program which may include creating relevant procedures and protocols, performing the testing, and working closely with relevant departments to resolve issues.
  4. Stays current with emerging materials technologies, intellectual property, competitor technology, and government regulations.
  5. Recommend material solutions related to reducing cost of existing components.
  6. Maintain procedures in accordance with Good Laboratory/Manufacturing Practice standards of the US FDA, 21 CFR Part 210 & 211.

Ability and willingness to travel both domestically and internationally up to 10% of the time.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Bachelor’s Degree in Biomedical Engineering, Bioengineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Polymer Science/Engineer. Ability to develop clear, concise, and adequate protocols, procedures, and work instructions required. Possess a working knowledge of lab controls and general scientific equipment and can adhere to written procedures. Knowledge of SolidWorks is a plus.

NorthStar Medical Radioisotopes is headquartered in Beloit, Wis. This location is our primary manufacturing site and accommodates all of our corporate functions. Beloit has small city charm, with a lively and renovated downtown, yet is also close to cities such as Madison, Milwaukee, Chicago, and Rockford.

Beloit is a part of the larger South Central Wisconsin/Northern Illinois region, which offers residents and visitors alike a unique blend of urban opportunities and rural, natural beauty.
